There are few things which put people in the Holiday Spirit more effectively than the brightly shining light displays which adorn many homes in the San Diego area. After a long and difficult 2020, a little more cheer around the holidays will be a very welcome thing indeed, and you may want to make a point of driving through some of the neighborhoods which go out of their way to provide that kind of cheer and good feeling during the holidays. Here are some of the best neighborhoods to visit to lift your spirits.
Candy Cane Lane, Poway
By mid-December, this neighborhood is lit up with an awesome display of twinkling lights, huge inflatable figures, and other holiday decorations that will entertain and sometimes dazzle visitors to the area. You should expect to move through the area at a slow pace, because this is a heavily visited neighborhood, and most people will probably remain in their vehicles this year to minimize contact with others.
Christmas Card Lane, Rancho Penasquitos
You'll understand the reason for this area being called Christmas Card Lane as soon as you enter the neighborhood. Starting at the first week of December, you'll see some giant-sized Christmas Cards out on the lawns of residents, along with huge Disney characters that everyone in your family will recognize. You'll have the opportunity to gather round a huge bonfire, assuming there are no COVID-19 restrictions against it, or you might want to enjoy a ride around the area in a horse-drawn carriage.
Belardo Lights, Tierrasanta
This is actually just a single house featuring more than 100,000 lights, and it is decorated each year by the Schimka family, originally for the family's two autistic sons to work on their own light display. Since then, it has grown into a holiday masterpiece which attracts visitors from far and wide. There is also some cheery Christmas music played on station 106.1 FM, which is synchronized with the twinkling of the lights for added enjoyment of visitors.
Carlsbad Christmas House
This larger-than-life house is lit up every holiday season with flamingos and penguins, a number of different animated displays, a dancing with Santa display, and it also provides an opportunity for you to visit the Land of Misfit Toys. You can see all this at 7607 Romeria Street, and it's well worth the visit, especially if you are in greater need of some holiday cheer this year.
Del Mar Fairgrounds
You can enjoy the Holidays in Your Car this year throughout the month of December, and even for a week or so after the holiday. You'll enjoy some magnificent sights and sounds, with more than one million LED's, holograms, and projected figures, all of which are synchronized with Christmas music to put you in a real holiday mood. You'll be able to take a sleigh ride around the grounds, and see some of the majestic displays which tower 40 feet high. Tickets to the light display are only available online, so be sure and get your ticket early, because you won't want to miss this spectacular holiday event.
